Hurricane Ian Important Information & Updates

September 28, 2022

October 7th, 2022 – 1:30 PM Update

Per the City of Charleston, they will have a knuckle boom truck on Daniel Island this weekend (October 8 and 9) to help with bulk trash pickup, specifically the piles of debris that haven’t been bagged.

On Monday, October 10th, the City will proceed to pick up yard debris bags, however, the truck will begin at the end of the route in an effort to reach the homes that didn’t get collected last week.

In addition, street sweepers will be out this coming week. The City of Charleston has asked residents to please keep cars and garbage cans (after they have been collected) off the street so the street sweepers can collect as much debris as possible and can work efficiently.

They have asked that residents please do this on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (October 10-12).

October 3rd, 2022 – 2:45 PM Update

Per the City of Charleston, the City’s Department of Public Works will have street sweepers out on Daniel Island beginning Monday, October 10th to assist in the post-storm clean-up of the streets.

Residents are asked to please roll in their garbage cans as early as possible on Monday, October 10th so that the street sweepers can efficiently and effectively clean the streets.

Additionally, Daniel Island already had 10 tons of yard waste removed on Monday, October 3rd. The City is working as hard and as fast as they can, however, they may not be able to service everyone this week due to the unusually high volume.

October 3rd, 2022 – 12 PM Update

Daniel Island was very fortunate and did not experience any significant impacts from Hurricane Ian this past Friday. With damage to several large trees and significant debris in common areas, our POA Field Operations Team with the help of our contractors was able to address the hazardous areas immediately as well as reopen all 3 community pools by 12 PM on Saturday, October 1st. The trails, POA-owned docks, and boardwalks were all left in good shape after the storm. Based on current conditions, we anticipate that everything should be back to normal in 2-3 weeks. We send our best wishes to those in Florida who are dealing with very difficult flooding circumstances in the aftermath.

There is presently and will continue to be some minor debris on our roads until the City has had an opportunity to remove it.

Please read the below information from the City of Charlestons’ Environmental Services Department regarding garbage and trash pick-up:

Garbage and trash: Residential garbage will resume on Monday, October 3, and follow a normal schedule. Bulk trash pickup will be suspended for two weeks (Monday, October 3 – Friday, October 14) to focus on yard debris pickup. Bulk trash pickup will resume on Monday, October 17. If we are unable to complete yard waste routes this week we will start where we left off the following weeks. Cleanup could take a couple of weeks to complete.

When placing debris at the curb for collection following Hurricane Ian cleanup, citizens should sort based on the following (C.A.T.) categories:

C –      Construction debris (building materials, drywall, lumber, carpet, furniture, etc.)

–Appliances (Refrigerators, washers/dryers, freezers, air conditioners, stoves, etc.)

T –      Trees and vegetation (tree branches, leaves, and logs)

Additionally, when placing limbs or bagged yard debris follow standard/normal City of Charleston placement and pick-up requirements.

It is the POA’s responsibility to clean up common areas and respond to damage and hazards in these areas post-storm. Property owners should start/continue to clean up the debris in their yards and in front of their houses. Any downed or damaged City street trees, which are located between the curb and sidewalk, should be reported to the City of Charleston Urban Forestry Division Manager, Clark DeCiantis at DeCiantisF@charleston-sc.gov or call Office: (843) 724-7148 or Mobile: (843) 509-9410.

If your City street trees are not down but do have broken or hazardous limbs, please know that you as the homeowner can clear these limbs should you feel comfortable doing so. If you do not feel comfortable clearing these limbs, please report them to Clark DiCiantis.

Our POA “report a problem” email address – which is reportaproblem@dicommunity.org worked very efficiently and effectively and we would like to thank all of those who submitted issues through that email address. We encourage anyone who may have identified storm-related issues to continue to use this address.

If you have already sent the problem in via that email address, please know that we received it and dispatched it to the appropriate contacts for follow-up. Please do not resend any previously submitted “report a problems” to us as we do not want to create duplicates. If you need to report an issue regarding POA-maintained property, for example, boat landings, pools, trails, parks (other than Governors, Freedom, or Etiwan), common areas, or ponds, please send any information you can, including the address/location of the issue and a photo of the problem.

We’d like to thank everyone for their continued patience as we work to bring Daniel Island back to its pre-storm condition.

Thursday, September 29th, 2022 – 10:30 AM Update

Amenities Update:

Our DICA/south end pools (Pierce, Scott, and Edgefield) will be closing at 12:00 PM on Thursday, September 29th until around 12:00 PM on Saturday, October 1st (pending post-storm inspection). The entry doors/gates will not be accessible and we ask that you please stay out of the pool areas for your safety.

For your safety, please stay off of the boardwalks, trails, and any POA-owned docks throughout the community until the storm has passed, roughly 12 PM Saturday, October 1st. Even minor erosion and flooding can negatively impact the structural integrity of the wooden boardwalks and docks. Our crews need time to inspect these areas before community use.

The Ralston Creek and Beresford Creek boat landings will not be closed during this time. However, please do not store any boats, trailers, or other vehicles at either landing as emergency personnel may need to access the water at any time during or after the storm.

Architectural Review Board (ARB):

Per the Daniel Island ARB office – All new construction builders and contractors have been instructed to secure and cover their dumpsters and either remove or secure all port-o-lets and loose materials at job sites by 3:00 PM today, September 29th. All owners who are having personal renovations or remodeling done at their homes have also been reminded to contact their contractors/builders about these items.

Wednesday, September 28th, 2022 – 2:30 PM Update

Hurricane Ian is extremely unpredictable and may strengthen/change course over the next 24hrs. Please monitor local weather and news outlets for the latest updates.

City of Charleston Update as of 11:26 AM: The below information was sourced from the City of Charleston website HERE.

Currently projected impacts: The National Weather Service has issued a Hurricane Watch and a Storm Surge Warning for Charleston County, anticipating a two- to four-foot storm surge in the next 48-hour period.

At this time, the primary threat to the City of Charleston is expected to be flooding due to heavy rainfall and high tides starting Thursday evening and continuing through Saturday. Between Thursday and Sunday, six to eight inches of rainfall is projected. Locally higher amounts and substantial rainfall rates may occur.

Coastal flooding is possible as early as Wednesday and may be exacerbated by rainfall Thursday and Friday. From Friday morning to Friday evening, there will be gusty winds, possibly to tropical storm force (35 – 45 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph), according to NWS Charleston.

City office closures: City of Charleston offices will be closed beginning at 3 p.m. Thursday and all day Friday.

Daniel Island POA Office: Due to predicted tropical storm conditions associated with Hurricane Ian, the POA Office will close at 12 PM on Thursday, September 29th, and remain closed on Friday, September 30th. During the office closure, all staff will be online working remotely. The POA office is expected to reopen Monday, October 3rd at 9:30 AM and resume normal office hours at that time.

Sandbag distribution extended into Thursday: Distribution began at 8 a.m. Wednesday and will continue until 6 p.m. Wednesday. There is a limited number of free sand and bags available for residents to build their own sandbags. Residents should bring their own shovels for assembly. Staff will be on-site to assist, as needed.

Sandbag distribution will continue Thursday, September 29 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., weather permitting.

There is a limit of 10 sandbags per residence. To purchase additional sandbags, citizens should contact a local home hardware store.

More information: Due to the potential for flooding, the City’s Stormwater Department has reserved temporary pumps to position in low-lying areas. Stormwater and Public Service Department crews continue to clean ditches and drains in flood-prone areas. Citizens can visit the City’s Adopt-a-drain webpage for information on ways they can help.

Monitor the next several day’s tide forecast in real-time with the city-developed TIDEeye app. TIDEeye reports tide and weather data from multiple sources in real-time to aid in decision-making.  Data sources include the National Weather Service, NOAA, City-operated weather stations, Waze user reports, and City reported road closures: https://gis.charleston-sc.gov/tideeye/

Citizens are encouraged to begin making preparations now. The City’s Hurricane Information webpage can be accessed at https://www.charleston-sc.gov/974/Hurricane-Information. Updates on Hurricane Ian will be released and posted to the webpage as new information becomes available.

For the most accurate and up-to-date weather forecasts, residents should stay tuned to the National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service Charleston websites, as well as local media and the FEMA app. Additional hurricane preparedness information can be found at www.scemd.org.
