Berkeley County Recycling Under Wando Bridge Update

July 27, 2018

The Daniel Island Property Owners’ Association office has been notified by the Berkeley County Recycling Coordinator, via a directive from the SCDOT (South Carolina Department of Transportation), that the Berkeley County cardboard recycling area previously located underneath the Wando Bridge and adjacent to the Volvo Car Stadium/Family Circle Tennis Center, will not be returning to that location. The cardboard recycling bins that were situated at that location prior to the Wando Bridge repair project, will no longer be allowed to return to that location per SCDOT. The Daniel Island POA has confirmed that there are no alternate locations on the Island for these containers.

SCDOT has indicated to Berkeley County officials that they are prohibiting any items be placed or stored within the right-of-way area under the Wando Bridge which would include these containers as they indicate that any items stored under the bridge in close proximity to the bridge columns create concerns for structural damage. The land under the bridge is a state right-of-way and therefore they have control over its use.

Berkeley County has asked that we relay this information to the residents of Daniel Island and to ask for your cooperation. Please do not drop off any cardboard recycling or other debris at this location as this area will no longer be picked up/serviced by Berkeley County Recycling. No dumping is allowed per Berkeley County and City of Charleston ordinances, and signage has been installed at this location indicating this information. The City of Charleston Police via the Livability Department will monitor this area and will give citations and or fines to any violators.

You are encouraged to visit the below Berkeley County website links for frequently asked questions as well as a list of other drop off recycling locations.

We have attached the Berkeley County Recycling Brochure that contains valuable information on recycle center locations, hours of operations, what recyclables can be dropped off at these locations, etc.

We would also like to remind Daniel Island residents that “curbside” recycling is available by calling Republic Services at (843)873-4810 to set up your account for weekly single-stream curbside service. Recycling bins are available for purchase through Republic Services. Republic Services is the contractor for the Berkeley County curbside recycling program.
