Spring Lawn Maintenance Tips

April 12, 2024

Spring is the season of growth, renewal, and repair. Below are some homeowner landscaping tips that will help your lawn look great and assist in maintaining its property value.

We would like to remind all residents that it is the responsibility of the property owner to ensure that their yard and home are maintained properly and kept to community standards. Please see the excerpt from the Daniel Island Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions below.

5.2 Owner’s Responsibility. Each Owner shall maintain his or her Unit, and all structures, parking areas, driveways, landscaping, fences, and other improvements comprising the Unit, in a manner consistent with the Community-Wide Standard, the Design Guidelines and the Zoning Ordinance, and all applicable covenants, unless such maintenance responsibility is otherwise assumed by or assigned to the Association. Each Owner shall also maintain the driveway and mailbox serving his or her Unit and all landscaping, including street trees, located in any right-of-way immediately adjacent to the Owner’s Unit.

*Please note that regarding street trees, please contact the City of Charleston Street Tree Trimming program for assistance. If you have questions regarding the City of Charleston street tree program, please contact David Grant, Deputy Director of Operations at 843.724.7148 or email at grantd@charleston-sc.gov. If your street tree needs attention, please call the City of Charleston Parks Department at 843-724-3457.

As the landscaping comes back to life, take note of these spring landscaping tips:

  • Rake your lawn to eliminate fallen leaves, branches, and other debris.
  • Detail and manicure your gardens and mow your lawn regularly to help them look their best.
  • Fertilize lawn areas to green up the lawn and to aid in preventive care for crabgrass and broad-leaf weed control. Fungus and grub control treatments may be needed for some difficult lawns.
  • Grassed areas should be fertilized, weeded, and watered such that the lawn is uniformly green and cut and maintained throughout the growing season, every week to 10 days, and then as needed during the rest of the year. During all seasons, including the dormant season, the lawn area should be kept free of weeds.
  • Regrow browning lawn areas with lawn seeding, lime, core aeration, or de-thatching.
  • Edge ornamental beds and add pine straw or natural mulch (no red or black mulch or rock is approved for beds) to enhance its appearance and improve the garden’s soil and environment. Please note that only pine straw is to be added around the street trees in the right-of-way area (the area between the street and the sidewalk).
  • Add some new plants to pots or hanging baskets to help accent your property.
  • Sweep and remove sand and dirt from walks and driveways.
  • Prune damaged trees, bushes, and shrubs that are on your property. This pertains to trees that are located between the sidewalk and your home. Please remember that the pruning of “street trees” which are the trees that are located between the curb and the sidewalk, should not be pruned by the homeowner as this pruning needs to first be submitted to and then approved by the Park & Tree Administrator of the Urban Forestry Division at the City of Charleston Department of Parks.

These are just a few of the ways that you can help enhance the curb appeal of your home. Other affordable things can be done that require minimum effort and little investment.
