Yard Debris and Garbage Reminders

May 18, 2022

We wanted to remind all residents of the following garbage pick-up, garbage can, and yard debris rules and regulations. Residents may receive a reminder door hanger or email reminding them of these restrictions. Following these rules/regulations will help avoid more garbage and debris from blowing down the street as seen on these recent windy days. We appreciate your attention to these matters that will help keep our island beautiful.

Please see the below City of Charleston Garbage Collection Policies as well as restrictions from the Daniel Island governing documents:

  • Residents should place the yard debris at the curb no earlier than two days before the scheduled pickup (Saturday if south of 526 (DICA) and Sunday if north of 526 (DIPA)).
  • Garbage containers (green city rolling can) should be placed at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the day before scheduled pick-up (Sunday if DICA and Monday if DIPA) and removed as soon as possible after pickup, but no later than 6 p.m. on the scheduled pickup days (Monday if DICA and Tuesday if DIPA)
  • When stored, trash cans should be screened from view. Screened from view means that they should be placed behind your fence, in the garage, or behind landscaping and not visible from the street or alley.
  • All leaves, twigs, weeds, and grass clippings shall be placed in brown paper bags designed for the purpose of leaf and clippings disposal.
  • Tree limbs and stumps need to be cut into 4-foot lengths and 4-inch diameters and stacked curbside clear of obstructions.
  • If a landscape contractor is being used, please have them remove the debris with them when they leave.
  • Contact the City if you have questions on larger or miscellaneous items that you would like to dispose of – for example, electronics, paint cans, furniture, construction materials, etc.
  • No household garbage may be placed with yard waste for pick-up.
  • To properly fill your garbage container, please follow these guidelines:
    • Drain and wrap or bag wet garbage.
    • Nothing should stick out of the top or hang over the sides of the container.
    • The lid of your container should close.
    • Don’t place objects on top of closed lids or in front of containers.
    • Any cardboard items need to be broken down and folded to fit in the green City cans.
  • Residents are reminded that cardboard and other items that are not inside the green garbage cart will not be collected for the safety of the crews. This change is consistent with Charleston County and other area municipalities in an effort to limit employees’ potential exposure to COVID-19. Any excess items that do not fit in the garbage cart can be taken to a Berkeley County Convenience Center HERE.

Acquiring a Standardized Residential Container

  • If you are a new resident of the City of Charleston, you will be issued a garbage container for your household upon request. Please submit an online request or call 843-724-7311 to request a container.
  • Residential containers are available in three sizes to suit the needs of the customer. Most customers use a 96-gallon container. A record of each assigned container is maintained to control and ensure against container loss.
  • If you wish to purchase an additional green City can, please submit an online request or call 843-724-7311 to request a container.

Please refer to the Daniel Island CC&R’s and the City of Charleston Regulations regarding garbage and yard debris pickup.

If your garbage or yard debris was not collected, the City asks that you report any missed collections through their online reporting system HERE. Use the Quick Links on the right side of the page to report your address and situation.

If you have any other questions, please contact the POA office at info@dicommunity.org or the City of Charleston Environmental Services office at 843-720-3891.
