Event Reminder Regarding Rotary Duck Race & Sounds of Summer Concert at Smythe Lake/Park This Friday, June 8th

June 04, 2018

The following is a message regarding a temporary street blockage that will take place this Friday, June 8th from 4:00 – 9:00 pm for the Daniel Island Rotary Duck Race and Sounds of Summer Concert.

On, Friday, June 8th from 4 – 9 pm, the Daniel Island Rotary Club will be hosting the 2018 Rotary Club Duck Race combined with the Daniel Island Property Owners Association’s “Sounds of Summer Concert” at Smythe Lake/Park.

We invite you to join us for the Duck Race as well as the free concert, featuring Plane Jane Band. We will also have food trucks, face painters, balloon artists, a bubble station and juggling.

Bring your lawn chair, beverage of choice and your appetite and kick back and enjoy the great sounds of some wonderful outdoor music while watching those duckies race to the finish line! We’ll have affordable food options available for purchase with several food trucks and food cart vendors at the park, also offering water and nonalcoholic beverages. Keep it simple and easy and purchase your dinner from our vendors!

For event logistics and food trucks being present on Daniel Island Drive as well as for pedestrian and vehicular safety reasons around the lake/park, the City of Charleston has requested that we close the following street temporarily for the event from the hours of 4:00 – 9:00 pm on that day.

The streets that will be temporarily closed from 4 – 9 pm on Friday, June 8th will be:

  • Daniel Island Drive from Blakeway Street to Smythe Street.
  • This is the only section of Daniel Island Drive that will be blocked off. Smythe Street will remain open as well as all other surrounding streets. We will be putting up temporary barriers with event personnel to monitor the Blakeway to Smythe Street intersection. City of Charleston police officers will be on site as well. For those who live along this intersection(Daniel Island Drive from Blakeway Street to Smythe Street) you will have access to come and go as you please, from the rear of your home or unit via the alley or lane behind your unit as this area will remain open.

While you are certainly not required to remove any of your vehicles that may be on the street in front of your home, you may wish to park any of your vehicles behind your home/unit before 4:00 so that you will have access to them and can exit your home via your lane or alley should you need to do so. We will be blocking off the park/lake side section of this intersection with signage and cones so please do not park your car across the street from your home that morning, afternoon or evening.

The Daniel Island Rotary Club and the Daniel Island POA is excited to be able to bring this event to Smythe Park this year. Please excuse any inconvenience the temporary street closure may cause you or your family. Please visit the DIPOA and Daniel Island Rotary Club Facebook pages for Duck Race & Sounds of Summer Concert information and updates.

A couple of reminders for everyone:

  • Tents – due to the smaller size of the venue, we will not be allowing personal/pop up tents to be put up at this event.  We want to maximize the space that we have for our attendees. Please do not stake out or reserve space prior to the event. We encourage everyone to bring a blanket or chairs for their comfort and seating.
  • Personal Golf Carts – Golf carts are not allowed in the park.  Please unload from the street and park on nearby streets or in the Daniel Island School parking lot.
  • Alligators – Please be aware that alligators may be present in the lake. Parents please do not allow your kids or animals to venture to close to the banks of the lake.
  • Trash/Personal Items – Please do not leave any trash in bags at your area when you exit the concert as this will attract wildlife and may end up being scattered throughout the park.  Thank you for looking around your area and removing all of your trash as well as your personal items that you brought with you. The POA is not responsible for any items left behind after the concert. Any tables, chairs or other personal items (other than those of the event organizers and rental company) that remain, will be removed by the POA staff.
