Daniel Island history subject of latest episode of ‘Local & Uncommon’ podcast
Host Robert Vingi welcomes developer Frank Brumley
In commemoration of the modern-day Daniel Island community’s 30th anniversary, Robert Vingi recently sat down with real estate developer Frank Brumley to unpack the island’s compelling history and remarkable transformation in the latest episode of his “Local & Uncommon” podcast.
In 1997, in his late 50s, Frank Brumley took on the largest and riskiest project of his career—purchasing Daniel Island, a 4,000-acre uninhabited island, from the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation. Today, the island is an award-winning master-planned community of over 16,000 residents. In this in-depth interview, Frank shares the history, decisions, and fortunate coincidences that shaped Daniel Island into what it is today. He discusses how a New York competition, a failed London real estate venture (Canary Wharf), and a connection through UVA led to him taking the helm. He also breaks down how then Mayor Joe Riley and his team navigated complex municipal boundaries across the Cooper and Wando Rivers to annex into the City of Charleston.
Frank explains the story behind donating land for schools like Bishop England High School, local churches, and over 200 acres of parkland. He shares how they brought the Family Circle Cup (now Credit One Charleston Open) and professional soccer to the island, and how ultra-conservative financing allowed the development team to weather the 2002 tech bubble and the 2008 financial crisis without compromising their vision. Finally, he touches on the creation of the Daniel Island Community Fund and Foundation, which has directed nearly $20 million back into local schools, parks, and underserved Lowcountry communities.
Whether you’re a local resident, real estate enthusiast, or student of Lowcountry history, this conversation offers an inspiring look at leadership, planning, and community building.
