Summer DI Young Philanthropists Contest Results

August 20, 2018

The Daniel Island Community Foundation was set up as a vehicle for Daniel Island residents and businesses to fund non-profit initiatives. A resident advisory committee was established in 2018 to assist in identifying charitable causes and organizations important to Daniel Island residents. The DI Community Foundation and the resident advisory committee set up four categories that represent the areas of giving that the community is focused on for the calendar year 2018. Each category lists corresponding non-profit organizations for which we have been fundraising.

Our featured non-profit organizations for 2018:

  • Human Services: East Cooper Meals on Wheels, East Cooper Community Outreach, Lowcountry Food Bank, Sustainability Institute
  • Children: Lowcountry Orphan Relief, Darkness to Light, Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center
  • Education: Daniel Island School, Philip Simmons High School, Reading Partners
  • Nature/Environment: Berkeley County SPCA, Water Missions International, East Cooper Land Trust

Contest Results:

A challenge was made to encourage our young residents to think of ways that they can support local non-profit organizations. Our DI Young Philanthropists worked hard this summer baking, selling homemade dog treats and washing golf carts to raise $624.01 for local charities. All proceeds from the DI Kids Young Philanthropists Contest will be donated to the Daniel Island Community Foundation and will be contributed towards the non-profit organization each contestant chose.

We are happy to announce that our contest winner is Christian Bussinelli, age 10, who raised the most money throughout the contest. Christian fund raised for Berkeley County SPCA by hosting a Golf Cart Cleaning Service.

The other top DI Young Philanthropists that we would like to mention are Avery Steele and Felix Brown who raised money for Berkeley County SPCA by selling homemade dog treats, Spencer Farina who raised money for East Cooper Meals on Wheels by hosting a lemonade stand and bake sale, and Nichella Allen who raised money for Berkeley County SPCA by baking and selling cookies.

Christian has won a $100 Visa gift card and he, along with the other top contestants, will enjoy a celebration at Skyzone.

Thank you to our participants and to the community who supported them. They all deserve a round of applause for the work that they did! Giving back can be done by anyone, of any age. Let’s keep it up Daniel Island!
