Picking Up Your Pet’s Waste Is A Pet Owner’s Responsibility

June 04, 2021

While the majority of our pet owners on Daniel Island are responsible pet owners who pick up after their pets consistently, there are those who fail to do this which creates unsanitary and unhealthy conditions for others. For those of you who aren’t following pet waste removal rules – please give your attention to the remainder of this article.

When others see this practice (failing to pick up their dog’s waste and or leaving it in a bag on the ground), they begin to think it is acceptable for them to do it as well, leading to an increasing number of forgotten dog bags decorating our trails, common areas and parks and giving dog owners a bad reputation.

Fortunately, there’s a simple fix – take one of those bags you brought from home or use one that the DIPOA has provided at their provided pet waste stations, grab the waste and pick all of it up. Then flip the bag inside-out so the waste is now inside, tie it shut and throw it away at one of the waste station trash cans or take it back home, but please don’t leave the bags on the ground. There is no excuse for owners to not pick up their pet’s waste as the DIPOA has provided over 60 pet waste stations across the island to assist with this requirement. While the POA has provided these pet waste stations for owners’ use and it is the POA’s responsibility is to keep these stations replenished and emptied on a weekly basis, please know that the DIPOA does not have any staff or contractors whose duty includes picking up pet waste from the ground at any of our common areas or parks. That is a pet owner’s obligation.

Poor dog/owner etiquette is an annoyance to the wonderful quality of life on Daniel Island, presents health and safety issues, and are violations of the CC&R’s of Daniel Island as well as City of Charleston ordinances.

Please care enough about your neighbors and community to prevent this discourteous habit of leaving your dog’s waste and/or bags behind.
