Help Prevent Bike Theft

August 18, 2022

Even though Daniel Island is an island set a little further away from congested areas, we are not entirely protected from acts of vandalism or theft. Recently, there have been several reports of stolen bicycles from public and private areas. Besides storing your bike in a secure location when at home, there are a few other steps you can take to help prevent theft.

  1. Lock It When Not In Use – It doesn’t matter where you are, whether you are at school, a restaurant, the pool, or a friend’s house, always lock your bike when you are not actively using it.
  2. Write Down The Serial Number – Each bike is equipped with a unique serial number. When you purchase a new bike, be sure to write down this serial number and place it in a secure location just in case you need it in the future.
  3. Do Not Leave It Out Overnight – We all can get a little forgetful at times but try not to leave your bike in a public space for an extended period of time. Not only can this lead to theft, but it can also be mistaken as abandoned and could be picked up by local police or other collection crews.
  4. Bike Storage – When at home, be sure to keep your bike in a secure location. This can be in your garage, a shed, locked in your back yard, etc. Anywhere out of site would be best.

If your bike is lost or stolen, please report it to the non-emergency police dispatch at (843) 743-7200 as theft is a police matter.
