City of Charleston & Dominion Energy Street Light Information

December 02, 2020

The following important information has been provided by the City of Charleston and Dominion Energy for the owners and residents of Daniel Island.

City of Charleston Street Light Information
The street lights on Daniel Island are placed in the right of way under the direction of the City of Charleston during new subdivision road construction. The decorative street lights are installed and maintained by Dominion Energy. Street lights are installed for the specific purpose of illuminating streets and sidewalks for safety.

How Do I Report A Burned Out Street Light Bulb?
Street light outages should be reported directly to Dominion Energy at (800)251-7234. We encourage residents to contact Dominion Energy to notify them of an outage. When you call, please provide the customer service representative with the Dominion Energy pole identifier number found on the pole itself. This is the silver tag on the poles with the “Muni 1” code. Be prepared to provide them with the tag number as well as the street address or location.

How Do I Go About Requesting A Street Light Shield?
Appropriate lighting levels are required for the safety of streets and sidewalks. As with all lighting at times there could be some conflicts with stray illumination into private parcels. Street lighting is planned and most often installed before any house construction takes place. If a situation occurs where curtains, blinds, and planted exterior vegetation will not provide enough reduction in light a shield may be installed in the light. Upon request, Dominion Energy can install a shield inside the light globe to reduce lighting on the “private” side of the lamp only. No shielding will be allowed on the “street” side of the light. The City of Charleston assesses shield requests on a case-by-case basis.

The City of Charleston, Dominion Energy, and the DIPOA would like to remind everyone that it is illegal and a fineable offense to paint the globes with any type of paint in order to reduce light illumination and glare. This is considered an act of vandalism and may damage pole operations. The only appropriate and accepted measure a resident can take to diffuse the light is to contact Dominion Energy at (800)251-7234 and request a shield.

For any street light questions or other requests please contact City of Charleston street lighting representative, Rodney Porter, at (843)724-7322 or at porterr@charleston-sc.gov. We appreciate everyone’s support in keeping our island safe and beautiful for all to enjoy.
