Cardboard and Other Items Placed On The Outside of Garbage Cans

May 26, 2020

Matt Alltop, City of Charleston Environmental Services Department Superintendent has provided our office with an important update regarding cardboard collection as well as other items placed on the outside of your City of Charleston green garbage cans and we wanted to share this with our Daniel Island residents.

Garbage collection (items placed inside the green City of Charleston garbage cans) continues as normal. However citizens are reminded that cardboard and other items that are placed on the outside of the green garbage cans, will not be collected at this time.

This change is consistent with Charleston County and other area municipalities in an effort to limit employees’ potential exposure to COVID-19. Any excess items that do not fit inside the garbage can should not be placed outside of/or next to the green carts as they will not be removed from the curb/ driveway or street. These items can instead be taken to a Charleston County Convenience Center or Berkeley county convenience center for disposal. Residents should cut or break down the cardboard boxes and place them inside the green garbage carts along with your other garbage and it will be removed. Bulk items such as furniture, appliances, bedding and other large objects will still be picked up as normal curbside. The only items that the City will not pick up at this time is “bagged or loose garbage” that is not inside your green city can and any cardboard that is not in your green city can. Currently the City of Charleston does not have a time frame as to when cardboard pickup will resume.

The City of Charleston would also like to remind the citizens that if you are unable to fit everything into one green garbage can, you may purchase a second can from the City of Charleston at the cost of $47.47. Please see provided links below from the City website that provide you information on ordering an additional green can.
