Before placing any large bulk item at the curb for collection, residents must first contact the City of Charleston. This helps ensure the item is eligible for pickup based on its type and size, and allows the City to schedule a timely collection, preventing items from sitting at the curb for extended periods of time.
Examples of acceptable bulk items include:
- Furniture
- Appliances
- Mattresses
Unacceptable waste for single-family residential collection includes:
- Hazardous waste (examples include: paint, auto fluids, batteries, household and pool chemicals)
- construction and renovation debris, including: concrete, dirt, sod, sand, plaster, and carpet
- Tires
- Hot ashes
