The 7th annual Dolphin Count, hosted by the Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network (LMMN), will take place on April 20th, 2024. This event aims to bring together marine mammal experts, volunteers, and community members to learn about Charleston’s local dolphin population, collect valuable data on their behavior using community science, and support conservation. This data is used to create distribution and abundance maps, as well as provide researchers with a better understanding of where these animals spend most of their time. Thirteen counting stations will be set up between 9 AM -12 PM, including a counting site at Daniel Islands Waterfront Park. Participants will help researchers count dolphins over 30 minutes. Dolphin Count is free and family-friendly. Registration is required.
In the week leading up to Dolphin Count, LMMN is partnering with local businesses to host several events to further educate the public and raise donations for LMNN, called Dolphin Week. There’s a variety of events around the Lowcountry.
