The Daniel Island Community Speaker’s Series will continue on Wednesday evening, April 24th, from 7:00-8:00 PM in the ballroom at the Daniel Island Club. The speaker will be Dr. Tonya Matthews, the President & CEO of the International African American Museum (IAAM), Charleston’s marquis exhibit that has already garnered international praise and recognition.
Almost all of us on Daniel Island came from somewhere else. Many of us cite coming to the Charleston Region for its rich culture and history. But what exactly does this mean? Rather than arriving here via luxury vehicles, clothes to fill a closet, and as a family full of anticipation, imagine for a moment arriving into Charleston Harbor shackled in the cargo hold of a sailing vessel, in deplorable disease-filled conditions, stripped of clothing, separated from family, and with no hope. Somehow, the slaves who survived these conditions were still able to leverage skill and resourcefulness into producing Carolina Gold, rice fields that created an economy making Charleston the most prosperous city in America which then blossomed much of the antebellum charm, customs, architecture, cuisine, and other aspects that we still enjoy today.
How do we somehow try to grasp and regard this? IAAM provides the perfect venue and Dr. Matthews’s leadership provides just the right touch.
Come join in on April 24th! There will be a cash bar and passed hors d’oeuvres between 6:30-7:00 PM. The program will begin promptly at 7:00 PM and will conclude around 8:00 PM.
