Safety Alert Update

May 16, 2019

Update on May 20th:

Recently, the Daniel Island POA has been made aware of a few pet deaths potentially associated with the ingestion of the granular substance identified as Ramik poison, which is commonly used as a rodenticide. We are saddened by the loss of these pets and offer our condolences to the families. Based on the information provided by resident sightings, we have created two maps on the locations of these sightings. These maps are a tool for awareness, as well as, a potential aid in identifying the source of distribution.

We are asking residents with any information regarding this incident to contact Chris Hamil, the Daniel Island Field Operations Manager at Chris.hamil@dicommunity.org or 843-696-4676 or you can send additional information to the City of Charleston Police Team 5 unit for their continued investigation.

Update on May 16th:

On Friday, May 3, 2019, the Daniel Island POA was made aware of an unidentified green granular substance which had been randomly spread on streets, sidewalks, private yards, and a POA park in the general vicinity of Ithecaw Creek Street, Brailsford, Lesesne, and Chimney Back streets.

Through an extensive search with the aid of horticulture vendors, Clemson Extension, Palmetto Poison Control, SCDHEC, and local veterinarians, the DIPOA is now able to confirm that the green granular substance is Ramik Green, which is a fish flavored rodenticide. Our Field Operations Manager, Chris Hamil, was given a positive confirmation from Ramik Green, the manufacturer of the product, on May 16, 2019.

In light of this information, we have attached a PDF below of the label from the product bag containing important information for anyone who has a pet or knows of someone who may have come in contact with the substance. This label includes precautions relating to handling of the substance as well as treatment, should contact or ingestion occur.

The DIPOA would like to restate that neither the DIPOA staff nor any of their contractors have used or applied Ramik Green in any of the areas that they maintain. The police were made aware of the incident upon initial report to our office on May 3, 2019 and are aware of the description and the precautions associated with the use and or ingestion of the substance. If anyone has any information regarding the incident, please send all information to the City of Charleston Police Team 5.

The DIPOA would like to stress the importance of reporting these types of incidents should residents encounter them and we would like to remind everyone about the importance of proper containment and labeling of materials or products for your personal home and landscape. When transporting materials outside your home or in your vehicle, be sure to secure all materials properly to ensure that spills do not occur.

While we are still unsure as to how this product was dispersed into these areas, we would like to remind everyone that they should never take it upon themselves to put out or disperse any type of rodenticide or other potentially harmful substances into any parks or common areas.

Thank you for your patience and to those observant residents who reported the substance.
