The Daniel Island Garden Club is made up of a group of Daniel Island residents of all ages who share a common love of flowers, plants, and all-around garden aesthetics. To engage the community, they conduct a Yard of the Month (YOM) contest. The YOM highlights and celebrates homes around the island that display front-yard landscapes that best represent the community. There are 7 zones in which homes are viewed and judged resulting in 7 winners each month! Each winning home is presented with a special DI Garden Club temporary plaque for its front yard to showcase that it was selected.
Guidelines for YOM: The judges are looking for all different types of landscapes as long they meet the design requirements of the Daniel Island ARB. Additionally, there are some basic rules the property must follow to receive the award and bragging rights:
- The landscape must continue to be maintained
- The property must be in good standing with the POA
- Lastly, the selected family agrees to have their name and picture published in the Daniel Island News
The 2023 YOM season is May-September with two additional holiday decorating contests for the Halloween and Festival of Lights seasons. These holiday decorating contest winners will have special plaques displayed for the best-decorated homes.
The Garden Club YOM judges will start knocking on doors around the middle of April, so give them a warm and welcoming southern greeting and you might receive a pleasant surprise! Don’t worry if you are not home, a note will be left for you to get back to the judges within 2 days.
Enjoy and keep your yard well-groomed, since this is what our beloved Daniel Island is all about.
