As the calendar turns toward the season of gratitude and generosity, our community is stepping up in incredible ways. This year, the Daniel Island community is rallying around three meaningful campaigns: a Thanksgiving Drive of nonperishable foods and toiletries; our fundraiser for Water Mission in their relief of Hurricane Melissa in the Caribbean; and the HALOS Angel Tree that provides children with holiday gifts.
Each campaign offers a way for you to make a difference, whether here at home or across the seas. This season, let’s focus on giving rather than receiving.
Give Thanks – Give Security: The Thanksgiving Drive
The first campaign invites us to come together in the spirit of gratitude and community-minded generosity. From November 4 through November 25, DICF is collecting non-perishable food, hygiene products, baby supplies, and more for three deserving local partners: Lowcountry Food Bank, East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO), and Lowcountry Blessing Boxes.
With a goal of collecting 200 lbs, even small contributions add up. Food & hygiene insecurity remain significant in South Carolina (nearly 678,710 South Carolinians faced hunger in 2024).
This campaign invites our community to give ‘thanks’ by giving back and to ensure security and dignity for those who might otherwise go without.
Double Your Impact for Hurricane Melissa Relief
The second campaign extends our reach beyond our immediate neighborhood to respond to urgent needs abroad. When Hurricane Melissa swept through the Caribbean, families were left without clean water, power, or basic supplies.
DICF pledged to match donations dollar-for-dollar, up to a total of $10,000, and is raising support for Water Mission, a Charleston-based non-profit that is on the ground distributing safe drinking water and emergency aid.
This is an opportunity for our community to exercise compassion on a global scale. By supporting relief efforts in the Caribbean, we are demonstrating that ‘giving’ knows no borders.
As of 11 AM on November 10th, a total of $375 has been collected towards the $5,000 goal.
HALOS Angel Tree Holiday Giving
Finally, as we head into the holiday season, DICF has partnered with HALOS, a nonprofit that supports grandparents, other relatives, and family friends (kinship caregivers) who are raising children to keep them out of foster care, for the “Angel Tree” giving drive.
This year, we have committed to sponsoring 100 children, and residents can sign up to “adopt” a child from the Angel Tree, purchase gifts, and drop them off at the POA Office (unwrapped) by December 3 for delivery.
It’s a reminder of the joy and relief that a thoughtful gift can bring and a chance to support local families in a deeply personal way during the holidays.
