Spring is the season of growth, renewal, and repair and it has come early this year! Help your home recover from winter and look its best.
As the landscaping comes back to life, take note of these early spring/late winter landscaping tips:
- Rake your lawn to eliminate fallen leaves, branches and other debris.
- Detail and manicure your gardens and lawns to help them look their best.
- Fertilize lawn areas to green-up the lawn and to aid in preventive care for crabgrass and broad-leaf control. Fungus and grub control treatments may be needed for some difficult lawns.
- Regrow browning lawn areas with lawn seeding, lime, core aeration, or de-thatching.
- Edge ornamental beds and add pine straw or natural colored mulch to enhance its appearance and improve the garden’s soil and environment.
- Sweep and remove sand and dirt from walks and driveways.
- Prune damaged trees, bushes and shrubs.
- Add some new plants to pots or hanging baskets to help accent your property.
It is also important to liven up the facade of your home. The Lowcountry is known for its humid climate. With the humidity comes mildew and mold. This is a very common problem for the Lowcountry and can be eliminated in several ways.
- Visually assess your home. If there are areas on your home or fence that need attention, determine whether to perform the removal yourself or through a contractor.
- When power washing, pay close attention to how it is performed to lessen the possibility of damage to siding if too much pressure is applied. For those who prefer more ecologically friendly or “green” products, there are commercial products available as well.
- When repainting siding, mildew resistant paints should be used. These include exterior enamels or paints containing a Mildewcide. Stained or naturally weathered wood siding can be protected by use of a water-repellent finish. Moisture, and therefore mold and mildew, can be controlled to a degree by arranging landscaping so that natural breezes can flow near the house.
- Remember to survey the exterior of your home, fence and garage on a regular basis (especially during the more humid and rainier months) to look for mildew and dirt and tackle it when you see. By keeping mildew and dirt under control with routine maintenance, it will preserve the look and value of your home for many years.
