How the DI Community Fund and Foundation Work

July 09, 2024

With so many new residents on Daniel Island, we wanted to continue our community education regarding our philanthropic initiatives on Daniel Island and how the Daniel Island Community Fund and Foundation work. All of this information is included in our annual Philanthropy Report which is mailed to each property owner in the first quarter of the year and is always available on our Philanthropy page.

The Daniel Island Community Fund (DICF)

DICF was established as a means for supporting community enhancement projects, special events, and philanthropic initiatives on Daniel Island and in the surrounding Cainhoy peninsula communities. This private 501 (c) 4 organization is financially supported by a Community Enhancement Fee on all resale transactions on the island. The structure of the DICF allows its financial resources to grow as the island grows, creating a legacy for the community for generations to come. Zero funding from Annual Property Owner Assessments goes toward the Community Fund.

The Daniel Island Community Fund Grants Committee is made up of Daniel Island residents, who are involved with all grants made. Grant Applications are accepted annually on April 1st and August 1st for project funding from qualified non-profit organizations. Organizations may apply once annually with a maximum award of up to $5,000. (*Additional funding for special projects may be considered on a case-by-case basis.)

Daniel Island Community Foundation

The Daniel Island Community Foundation is a nonprofit corporation duly organized under the laws of the State of South Carolina. This private 501 (c) 3 organization is financially supported by donations from Daniel Island Residents, businesses, and employees.

The Daniel Island Community Foundation was set up as a vehicle for Daniel Island Residents and Businesses to fund non-profit initiatives. A resident advisory committee has been established to assist in identifying charitable causes and organizations important to Daniel Island residents.

In the past few years, the Daniel Island Community Foundation and its resident advisory committee have created a matching initiative in which select organizations are challenged to fundraise $5,000 for their organization which was then matched up to $5,000 by the Daniel Island Community Fund.

2024 Matching Campaign

Many residents and businesses donate to various nonprofit organizations on their own. As part of the philanthropic spirit, the Daniel Island Community Fund will accept matching requests for these donations. Match requests will be reviewed in the fourth quarter of each year.

How does your donation qualify for a match?

  • The organization must directly affect our tri-county area.
  • DICF will match up to $2,500 per organization if funds are available. On a case-by-case basis DICF will match more should the funds be available.
  • Match requests will be reviewed in the 4th quarter of the year. Please have requests submitted by December 15th, 2024.
  • Each resident/business can submit up to 1 request for a donation match per calendar year.

To Apply For A Match
Please send your request to Danielle Stix at Danielle.Stix@dicommunity.org for review. In your email, please include

  • The organization’s name
  • Their Tax ID
  • What they do
  • Why you believe it qualifies for a match
  • Confirmation of your donation (bank statement letter or email from the organization, etc.)
  • Your property address or DI Business name/address

The POA hopes that all Daniel Island property owners can be proud of the enormous change we are making in people’s lives thanks to these philanthropic efforts. It is estimated that over the last 9 years, the philanthropic initiatives funded by both the Daniel Island Community Fund and Foundation have impacted over 100,000 lives. We look forward to continuing this momentum for positive change and appreciate the community’s support in these endeavors.
