As many of you are aware, the City of Charleston signed a contract with a new trash and yard debris contractor who recently began collecting on Daniel Island. With this transition, they have noticed a few recurring issues related to how trash and yard debris are being placed for pickup.
To help ensure smooth and timely collection, we’d like to remind residents of the proper procedures:
Yard Waste Guidelines
- Loose yard waste such as leaves and mulch should be placed in brown paper yard waste bags only. These items should not be placed in the City-issued garbage carts nor in plastic bags.
- Garbage carts are for household waste only. Yard waste placed in these carts will not be collected.
- Larger yard debris like branches and palm fronds should be stacked in a neat pile at the curb for pickup.
Garbage Cart Guidelines
- Only City of Charleston-issued carts will be serviced. Personal carts will not be collected.
- There should be a minimum of 3 feet between carts, yard waste, mailboxes, cars, etc.
- If you need a City-issued cart, you can purchase one at cost by contacting the Citizens Service Desk.
- Carts must be placed out for collection no later than 7:00 AM on collection days, as pickups begin promptly at that time.
Tagged Waste & Helpful Tools
- If there is an issue with your waste setup, the new contractor will leave a tag explaining what was wrong and why it was not collected.
- The City of Charleston also encourages residents to download and use the CHS TrashTracker app, which offers collection reminders, holiday schedule updates, educational materials, and the ability to submit work orders for various services.
We appreciate your cooperation as we adjust to the new waste collection process. These guidelines help ensure that everyone’s garbage and yard debris are collected efficiently and on time.
Thank you for helping keep Daniel Island clean and beautiful!
