Update September 6th at 2 PM:
During our initial assessment of the island post Hurricane Dorian, we are happy to report that the island did not sustain any severe damage. We do have quite a few reported downed trees and a good bit of debris, but for the most part, Daniel Island weathered the storm well.
POA Maintained Common Areas, Greenways, Bike Paths, Trails, Parks, and Amenities:
The Daniel Island POA Field Operations Team along with The Greenery and additional subcontractors are continuing to work on storm cleanup following Hurricane Dorian in all of the POA owned and maintained property such as trails, common areas, green ways, bike paths, and at our amenities. We are working with the City of Charleston to accomplish the removal of all storm and yard debris. We would like to remind you that there are still some hazardous areas, so as you and your children are out and about, please be aware and refrain from pulling/hanging on tree limbs that may be leaning or compromised from the storm or those that may still be in a trail or pathway. Over the next several weeks, we will be working with our various contractors and engineers to pick up debris and continue to assess damage throughout the island. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work to bring the island back to its pre-storm condition for everyone’s safety and enjoyment.
Amenities:
All amenities on Daniel Island have been assessed for damage and have or will reopen shortly.
- The Pierce Park Pool and Edgefield Pool are currently open for resident use.
- The Scott Park Pool will reopen tomorrow, Saturday, September 7th by 12 PM
- The Ralston Creek and Beresford Creek boat landings are currently open for resident use.
Reporting Downed, Leaning or Damaged Trees:
- City Trees – (Trees located between the curb and the sidewalk)
- Report these to the City of Charleston Urban Forestry Division Manager, Clark DeCiantis at DeCiantisF@charleston-sc.gov as well as at https://gis.charleston-sc.gov/
report-damage/. Please send a picture of the tree with your address along with the species of the tree if known as this information is helpful should the tree need to be replaced.
- Report these to the City of Charleston Urban Forestry Division Manager, Clark DeCiantis at DeCiantisF@charleston-sc.gov as well as at https://gis.charleston-sc.gov/
- Personal Property Trees – (Trees on your personal property that are not street trees)
- Any tree that is on someone’s personal property is the owners’ responsibility to remove if fallen. If a tree must be removed, please send a picture of the tree with your address to reportaproblem@dicommunity.org along with the species of tree if known. This information is helpful to the POA/ARB office should the tree need to be replaced.
- POA Maintained Property: (i.e., boat landings, pools, amenities, trails, parks (with the exception of Governors, Freedom, and Etiwan which are City parks), common areas, and ponds)

Scheduled Events/Activities:
We have 2 events that were scheduled to take place this weekend that are cancelled or postponed until further notice. Please see below for more details:
- The Daniel Island Friday Night Market – Lowcountry Farmers Markets, LLC has made the choice to cancel the last market of the season. In the meantime, check out their new Farmers Market coming to Daniel Island starting Saturday, September 14th from 8 AM – 1 PM at Providence Baptist Church (294 Seven Farms Drive).
- The 9/11 Heroes Run has been postponed until further notice. Updates on this event including their reschedule date will be posted to the POA website (www.dicommunity.wpengine.com) as soon as it becomes available.
Damage Assessment:
City damage assessment teams have been mobilized and are ready to be deployed to identify impacted areas and document storm-related damage. The City has indicated that their signal recovery and initial debris clearing crews are prepared for deployment throughout the city to address signal outages and downed trees as conditions allow.
Reporting of Storm Related Damage:
To help with the city’s assessments, citizens are asked to report ALL storm-related damages at https://gis.charleston-sc.gov/
Storm damage to homes should be addressed as soon as possible by the individual homeowner, including things such as downed or leaning trees that could cause a hazard to homes or persons, damaged fences, damaged shutters, and other related damages.
If private fences were damaged by the Hurricane, a property owner can repair it as needed as long as it matches the existing location, materials, and color. If a property owner wants to change anything about the fence, then the changes would need to be submitted to the ARB for review.
Garbage, Trash & Yard Debris Pickup:
Per the City of Charleston – Garbage and trash pickup by the City/Republic Services will begin on Monday, September 9th. If the City is unable to complete garbage on Monday, September 9th, they will return on Tuesday, September 10th to finish. The City/Republic will pick up normal “yard debris” beginning on Monday, September 9th, but “storm related debris” will be picked up later as they determine the extent of that type of debris. The City has indicated that residents can place the storm debris curbside, but they do not have a date as to when specific pickup will take place. The City/Republic will be working with Berkeley County on this storm debris removal. If you currently use or will be using a landscape contractor to take care of maintaining your lawn or if you have hired a contractor to perform post storm cleanup of any kind including removal of normal yard debris and storm debris, please make sure that you instruct the contractor to take away all debris and not place it at the curb for pickup by the City/Republic. This will help greatly in clearing the streets of debris in a timely manner. It is also a requirement of the City that this take place by landscape contractors. The POA would also like to remind all owners not to move or relocate their debris onto POA maintained common property or an undeveloped or open lots for removal by the POA or their landscape contractors as this is not allowed.
Please Note – If your garbage or yard debris is somehow missed and not picked up, please be sure to follow the directions below in reporting the non-pickup to the City of Charleston.
Reporting Garbage and Yard Debris Not Collected:
The Daniel Island POA office would like to remind all owners that if they encounter missed garbage or yard debris collection, they should contact the City of Charleston Environmental Services Department directly via their online reporting system to report when garbage or yard debris is not collected. The City has stated that this is the preferred method of reporting garbage not collected. Garbage and yard debris are normally picked up on Mondays with the exception of special holiday schedule changes.
Whether your complaint is that no pick up occurred or that partial pickup occurred, the protocol for reporting both is the same – to use the City’s online reporting system.

The City contracts with Republic Services who is the subcontractor to the City. The Supervisor of the Environmental Services Department, Matt Alltop would like the residents of Daniel Island to report these incidences to his department and not to Republic Services since the City manages the contract with Republic.

As we continue this massive cleanup, we realize there will be times of frustration on everyone’s part as it relates to the time required to get our community back to its normal, pristine shape. Update September 5th at 5 PM:
Now that it seems that the worst of Hurricane Dorian has left our area, we are aware that some owners have been impacted with storm related damage, some more than others. We wanted to remind everyone about current as well as post storm reporting of damage, whether it be out in the community or on one’s private property. We very much appreciate everyone’s “eyes on the ground” and we thank those of you who have utilized our preferred reportaproblem@dicommunity.org email address system for reporting storm related damage concerns. This email address enables us to track incoming emails and concerns related to this storm.
As of this afternoon, our office has received via the reportaproblem@dicommunity.org address approximately 30 reports of storm related damage. Please feel confident that if you have submitted your concern via this email address, our office has received your information. For those matters that are POA maintained property related, we will begin working tomorrow and into the next several weeks and will handle the most critical matters first, and will continue to address all issues in a timely manner. We appreciate your patience while the POA and the City work to clean up post storm. We ask that you continue to use reportaproblem@dicommunity.org for any storm related issues.
We would also like to share some very important information that the City has provided to us below that we included in the 12:00 update, regarding questions related to trash and yard debris pickup and reporting of storm damage.
TRASH CANS/YARD DEBRIS/OTHER MISCELLANEOUS/HOUSEHOLD ITEMS:
Do not put trash cans, yard debris or other items at the curb, street or in the driveway as the City has not determined yet as to when the garbage or yard debris will be collected. As soon as our office receives notification from the Environmental Services Department/Republic regarding this, we will post this information on the POA Facebook page and POA website. The 12:00 message indicated that all residential garbage and trash collection is suspended through this weekend.

Update September 2nd at 12:30 PM:
Hurricane Dorian is predicted to impact our area within the next few days. On Sunday, September 1st, Governor McMaster ordered an evacuation beginning today, Monday, September 2nd at 12 PM for the following:
- Colleton Zones A, B
- Beaufort Zone A
- Jasper Zone A
- Charleston Zones A, B, C
- Dorchester Zone D
- Berkeley Zones B, G
- Horry Zone A
- Georgetown Zone A
A full, four lane reversal on I-26 in Charleston at the interchange of I-26 and I-526 is currently in effect until further notice. The full reversal continues west until the I-26 crossover to I-77 just outside Columbia in Lexington County. We would like to remind you to take the following precautions:
- Daniel Island is in Charleston/Berkeley County Evacuation Zone B
- We continue to work with builders to secure lots.
- City of Charleston notified us that trash and yard debris will be suspended until further notice.
- The POA Field Operations Staff has begun the process of preparing for Hurricane Dorian at all of our common areas, pools, boats landings and other amenities. All amenities, including the pools will be secured and closed by the end of business day Tuesday, September 3rd.
- Once the pools are closed, in order to safely secure them, the entry doors will not be accessible. Please stay out of the pool areas for your safety as the water will not be maintained to the levels needed for safe swimming.
- When closed, please stay off of the boardwalks, out of the boat landings and off of the docks throughout the community until inspectors have looked at these areas and reopened them post storm.

At 8 AM today, the City of Charleston began giving out a limited supply of free sand and bags available for residents to build their own sandbags. Residents should bring their own shovels for assembly. Staff will be on-site to provide assistance, as needed.

- A limit of 10 sandbags per car will apply to all residents visiting this location. To purchase additional sandbags, citizens should contact a local home hardware store.

Update September 1st at 8:30 PM:
Hurricane Dorian will impact our area within the next few days. On Sunday, September 1st, Governor McMaster ordered an evacuation beginning Monday, September 2nd at 12 PM for Colleton Zones A, B; Beaufort Zone A; Jasper Zone A; Charleston Zones A, B, C; Dorchester Zone D; Berkeley Zones B, G; Horry Zone A, and Georgetown Zone A.
McMaster has also ordered a lane reversal for Interstate 26 west from Charleston to Columbia also set to begin Monday, September 2nd at 12 PM.
We would like to remind you to take the following precautions:

know-your-zone/ - Be sure to check around the entire perimeter of your residence and secure or bring inside any exterior items such as trash cans, recycling bins, planters (both hanging and potted), yard art, furniture, grills, bird feeders, basketball hoops, sports goals & other play/recreational equipment and any other loose items that could damage your property or neighboring properties or become life threatening projectiles.
- All builders and contractors have been asked to remove or secure their dumpsters with a cover and to remove or secure all port-o-lets and loose materials at job sites. If you are having personal renovations or remodeling at your home, please remind your contractors/builders about these items.
- Please refrain from putting trash and yard debris to the curb until further notice.
- In the event you lose electricity, notify Dominion Energy of power outages.
- Make sure you have an adequate supply of canned goods, bottled water, radio, cell phone, portable charger and batteries. If you do not have bottled water on hand, fill a bathtub or sink with fresh water

Update August 30th at 11 AM:
As of Friday, August 30th at 11 AM, the National Hurricane Centers’ model predictions do not indicate Hurricane Dorian as having a direct landfall in Charleston.
However, Daniel Island may experience Tropical Storm conditions (significant rainfall, flooding and high winds). Please be vigilant in monitoring the weather conditions and be prepared to follow recommendations of state and local authorities as storms are often unpredictable.

Downed or damaged City street trees, which are located between the curb and sidewalk should be reported to the City of Charleston Parks Department Deputy Director of Operation, Clark DeCiantis at DeCiantisF@charleston-sc.gov or call Office: (843) 724-7148 or Mobile: (843) 509-9410.
For all other issues regarding POA maintained property, for example, boat landings, pools, trails, parks (other than Governors, Freedom or Etiwan), common areas, or ponds, please email reportaproblem@dicommunity.org. Any information you can send, including address/location of the issue and a photo of the problem is appreciated.
The POA office will be closing at 12:30 PM on Friday, August 30th and will remain closed on Monday, September 2nd for the Labor Day Holiday. On Tuesday, September 3rd, the office will reopen and operate normal business hours Mon-Fri, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM. For the safety of our POA team, the POA office may close depending on the track of the storm and recommendations of local and state authorities.

Reminder: Garbage will NOT be picked up Monday, September 2nd due to the Labor Day holiday. Pick up is delayed to Tuesday, September 3rd.
