Daniel Island Roundabout Project Updates

July 23, 2019
The following information has been provided to the Daniel Island POA office by Infrastructure Consulting and Engineering (roundabout project management company). If you have any questions please contact Marie Delcioppo, DINA President, at president@dineighborhoodassociation.org
Update as of July 19th:

Daniel Island Roundabout Complete, Ribbon-Cutting Planned for July 26

Project completed July 19, ahead of schedule and under budget

MONCKS CORNER, S.C.- (Friday, July 26) Berkeley County will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Daniel Island Roundabout, at Seven Farms Drive and Daniel Island Drive, at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 26. The public is invited to come together with neighbors and community leaders to celebrate this project, a product of the County’s one-cent sales tax.

The final inspection for the project was completed this morning, Friday, July 19, and inspectors confirmed substantial completion.

The project consists of a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of Daniel Island Drive and Seven Farms Drive.

Berkeley County contractors started construction on the roundabout on April 22, 2019. The project was originally expected to be complete by the middle of August; however, it is wrapping-up nearly a month early.

This project is part of the Berkeley County 2014 one-cent sales tax program and was budgeted to cost $2.4 million; however, it is now estimated to come-in almost $900,000 under budget.

I’m thankful for our staff and contractors who efficiently completed this project, ahead of schedule and under budget. We are working diligently at completing all projects on the Berkeley County sales tax referendum; critical infrastructure improvements that would not be possible without the support of the Berkeley County taxpayers.

Update June 25th:

We made great progress last week getting the truck apron concrete installed inside the roundabout. We appreciate everyone’s patience managing the minor traffic delays this created a few times.

The truck detour will remain in effect until the concrete gains sufficient strength and the asphalt is placed, which will be through July 3. The plan is to complete the asphalt work next week in the evenings on Sunday-Tuesday.

Hopefully the weather will cooperate, and we will get the project looking even better and closer to completion. You will see a lot of the orange tree protection fence and silt fence removed, and the site will, in general, be more cleaned up in an effort to improve the appearance for the July 4 holiday. Remaining signs, lighting, irrigation, and landscaping will continue to be installed and should be completed around July 15.

Update June 17th:

We continue to make headway! Last week, most of the curb for the interior of the roundabout was constructed. This week, that curb will be completed and the concrete truck apron between the two curbs will be poured. The plan is also to finish all other missing concrete on the project, along with removing and replacing the sections of curb that were damaged by trucks driving through the roundabout. The brick pavers and small section of sidewalk by the apartments will be finished as well. The job will really take shape by end of the week. Finally, irrigation and landscaping will begin, which is planned to take 2-3 weeks.

You will notice an increased police presence in the area due to trucks not heeding the detour and damaging curb (as mentioned above).

Update June 3rd:

The contractor will continue at night this week with constructing the remaining curb and sidewalk, along with the planted median on Seven Farms Drive. They will then move into the center of the roundabout to build the truck apron and landscaped area at night next week. Please continue to be cautious when in the area of the construction.

Update May 30th:

Traffic Shift Begins Sunday Night for Daniel Island Roundabout

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (Thursday, May 30, 2019) – Berkeley County continues work on the Daniel Island roundabout, located at Daniel Island Drive and Seven Farms Drive. Crews will remove the traffic light at the intersection on Sunday night, June 2. Traffic will shift to the roundabout configuration by Monday morning, June 3.

There is a message board at the intersection alerting motorists about the traffic shift. Motorists are asked to exercise caution at the roundabout, and watch for pedestrians and construction crews during this time.

Currently, work continues with the curb and sidewalk, as well as planted median on Seven Farms Drive.

Berkeley County started construction on the roundabout on April 22. The project consists of a single-lane roundabout at the intersection.

The project will be complete by early August, prior to the 2019-2020 school year, in an effort to minimize impact to school traffic.

This project is part of the Berkeley County 2014 one-cent sales tax program and is within budget. It is expected to cost approximately $2.4 million, including design, permitting, right-of-way acquisition and construction.

Update May 28th:

Running a little behind being out last week and with the holiday yesterday. They are continuing with the curb and sidewalk on the greenscape and church corners and hope to have it all done by next week. They will also work on the area at the end of the planted median on Seven Farms Drive this week. They plan to pave the extra roadway area between existing roadway and new curb this week and will prepare for the traffic switch. They have made arrangements to switch traffic to the new roundabout configuration on Sunday night, so expect a major change on the way in/out on Monday. You may have noticed the message boards set up last Friday mentioning this, and they will provide the exact date to the public in the next couple of days. Thank you all for your patience.

Update May 19th:

This week, the curb and sidewalk continues to be installed on the Daniel Island Academy corner, which will wrap up next week. On the Providence Church corner, asphalt will begin to be removed, new curb installed, and the fire hydrant relocated. There is a possibility that work may begin on The Church of the Holy Cross corner as well, which will start with the demolition of asphalt and the installation of new curb. The goal is to have all work on the corners complete in about 3 weeks, at which time work will begin on the center median of the roundabout along with the raised median on Seven Farms Drive. When the center work begins, we can expect a major shift in traffic, most notably with the removal of the traffic signals and the use of the final roundabout configuration.

They will continue to keep you updated as to those changes and will be installing message boards on Daniel Island Drive and Seven Farms Drive with notifications of these changes. Finally, work will cease no later than 2:30 pm on Friday, May 24 (unless very minor off-road work) and will reconvene Tuesday, May 28, at 6:00 am in honor of the Memorial Day Weekend.

Update May 13th:

This week, curb and sidewalk on the 305 Seven Farms Drive Apartment corner continues to be poured. Curb and sidewalk will begin on the Daniel Island Academy corner along with the remaining drainage work, both of which should be complete early next week. Work will then begin on the Providence Church corner, starting with demolition of curb and asphalt and the relocation of the fire hydrant.

They are working to keep all pedestrian access open at this time and ask everyone please be aware of the changes and construction equipment working in the area.

Update May 6th:

Contractors have completed the concrete work for the driveway to the apartments and will reopen the drive Monday afternoon after they get sufficient strength on the concrete. The contractor plans to continue with curb installation at the apartment corner and begin some construction of the new sidewalk. They will also move over to the school corner and continue with the underground drainage work that needs to be done. They will also demo the foundations to the old mast arm signals on Monday night.

Update April 29th:

Infrastructure Consulting and Engineering has been working this morning installing the remaining striping for the first traffic phase and will keep it in this configuration for the next six weeks or so. They plan to complete the temporary traffic signal tonight and you will see the existing mast arms removed this week. They also plan to work on the drainage structure in front of the school and should finish this today. They will begin work on the new curb and gutter in front of the apartment building this afternoon and continue the rest of the week.

Update April 23rd:

  • The contractor will be on site this week primarily working in the corner by 305 Seven Farms Drive.
  • They plan to remove some asphalt and curb in order to begin work on new curb and alignment change for the roundabout.
  • They also plan to complete the installation of the temporary signal and remove the existing one.
  • Please be advised of the changes in traffic patterns as we move through the different phases of construction.
