Help Local Kids & Families Stay Strong This School Year

August 11, 2025

This Labor Day, the Daniel Island Community Foundation is launching a Start of School Food & Hygiene Drive to support children and families in our community who don’t always have enough to eat. Our goal is to collect over 200 lbs. of nonperishable food and hygiene products for local nonprofits between Tuesday, September 2nd, and Thursday, September 18th.

Across South Carolina, food insecurity remains a growing challenge, especially for kids. According to Feeding America, 197,310 children in our state face hunger in 2024. For many students, the return to school also means the return of daily challenges: empty lunchboxes, skipped meals, or worrying about where their next meal will come from.

When families must choose between paying bills and buying groceries, they often face impossible trade-offs—skipping meals, cutting portions, or going without basic hygiene essentials just to get by. Hunger can affect the ability of kids to focus in class, keep up with homework, and participate in after-school activities. The same is true for basic hygiene products—without them, a child’s health, confidence, and dignity can be impacted.

Here’s how you can help:
We’re asking the community to donate:

  • Nonperishable foods for kids and families (peanut butter, granola bars, canned fruits/vegetables, pasta, rice, cereal)
  • Toiletries and hygiene products (soap, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant)
  • Household cleaning supplies

Drop-off location:
POA Office (130 River Landing Drive, Suite 1C)
Tuesday, September 2 – Thursday, September 18
Hours: 9 AM – 4 PM

Your donations will support:

  • Lowcountry Blessing Boxes
  • Lowcountry Food Bank
  • East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO)

These local nonprofits work year-round to fight hunger, provide essential items, and give hope to families right here in our community.

Let’s make sure every child has what they need this school year, keeping them nourished and ready to learn.
