Hurricanes form when ocean water is warmest. In the Atlantic, hurricane season is over the summer and fall – from June 1 to November 30 each year. In preparation for the 2023 hurricane season, the South Carolina Emergency Management Division kicked off South Carolina’s first Hurricane Preparedness Month on May 1st, which will take place during the month of May.
Hurricanes are a hazard in themselves…but you may not think about some of the associated hazards that go along with them.
Do you know the difference between a watch and a warning? If a warning is issued, immediately get to higher ground or leave the area.
Are you paying attention to the wind with an approaching storm? Extreme wind can be deadly; get inside immediately if there is an extreme wind warning.
