How Should I Report Missed Garbage & Yard Debris Pickup?

August 18, 2020

The DIPOA staff receives calls and emails from owners regarding missed garbage and yard debris pickup at their home or unit each week. We wanted to clear up some confusion that might be out there as to whom to report this to when it occurs as well as who is responsible ultimately for this municipal public service – and we wanted to take this opportunity to educate everyone on this topic.

The City of Charleston and not the DIPOA is the responsible entity for garbage and yard debris pickup.

The function of the DIPOA is to act as a liaison regarding the complaint should the owner not receive satisfaction/remedy after reporting the problem to the City. The DIPOA cannot ensure that the pickup occurs as expected each week as that is the responsibility of the City of Charleston and their contractor that they hire to perform the pickup.

When missed pickup of garbage in your cans or yard debris occurs, all complaints or concerns should be reported by the owner directly to the City of Charleston Environmental Services Department. Many owners are under the impression that they should report this to Republic Services since they see the Republic trucks throughout the neighborhoods. Republic is the contractor that the City currently uses for pickup. Please do not contact Republic Services but instead contact the City. As you can see by the attached image the garbage cans have the City of Charleston logo on them and not Republic Services.

Below is how you should always report your missed pickup to the City:

  • Click HERE to report your garbage or yard debris as not collected.
  • Click HERE to the City of Charleston Garbage & Yard Debris Collection website page which includes additional information should you have other questions or want to learn more.

All followup concerns or additional questions regarding this service, should be directed to:
