SUMMARY:Credit One Charleston Open
DESCRIPTION:In 2025\, the Credit One Charleston Open celebrated 25 years of award-winning tennis on Daniel Island\, continuing a legacy that began on Hilton Head Island in 1973. For a quarter century\, the world’s best players and most passionate fans have gathered in Charleston for nine days of tennis excellence. \nAs the largest women’s-only professional tennis tournament in North America\, the event welcomes nearly 90\,000 attendees to the state-of-the-art Credit One Stadium each spring. It features a 48-player singles draw\, a 24-player qualifying draw\, and a 16-team doubles draw. \nIn April 2025\, Credit One Bank extended its title partnership of the tournament through 2031 and announced that\, beginning in 2026\, the Credit One Charleston Open will award equal prize money—a historic milestone that underscores a shared commitment to advancing women’s sports. This move reflects the bank’s belief that women athletes deserve equal investment and opportunity\, and further cements Charleston’s role as a leader on the WTA Tour. With this announcement\, the Credit One Charleston Open became the first standalone WTA 500 tournament to voluntarily increase prize money to match comparable ATP 500 events. \nRecognized by the WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz\, the Credit One Charleston Open has been named WTA 500 Tournament of the Year for four consecutive seasons (2022–2025). The tournament has been honored by the WTA for its exceptional player experience\, dedicated team\, and welcoming atmosphere. This award reflects the Credit One Charleston Open’s ongoing commitment to the sport and its athletes\, as well as the passion and enthusiasm of its fans. \nTennis Channel provides comprehensive coverage of the Credit One Charleston Open\, broadcasting every match from first ball to last. Fans across the country can follow the action live throughout the tournament\, with expert commentary\, in-depth analysis\, and exclusive behind-the-scenes content. \nFor more information on the Credit One Charleston Open\, call 843.856.7900\, email info@creditonestadium.com\, or follow the tournament on Facebook (@CreditOneCharlestonOpen)\, Twitter (@CharlestonOpen)\, or Instagram (@CreditOneCharlestonOpen). \n**The above information was sourced from the Credit One Charleston Open website.

SUMMARY:DI Speaker’s Series
DESCRIPTION:The Daniel Island Community Speaker’s Series returns on Wednesday evening\, April 15\, from 7:00 – 8:00 PM in the ballroom at the Daniel Island Club.  The speaker will be Dr. Joseph Scalea a transplant surgeon\, the Vice Chair of Surgery\, and Director of Innovation at the Medical University of South Carolina. \nDr. Scalea is a transplant surgeon. What he does is hugely important. Without a new organ\, his patients are going to die. He is also an inventor and an entrepreneur. In the world of transplant surgery\, the required logistics are measured in minutes. With that in mind\, he founded two companies that integrate drones into the supply chain. Imagine evaluating the organ\, accepting it\, arranging the drone transport\, monitoring the organ’s temperature\, its location\, and its ETA all from an app on your phone. That is revolutionary. The medical industry’s ability to diagnose\, treat\, and cure some of our most serious diseases is advancing at lightning speed. \nOver the years\, Dr. Scalea has performed thousands of transplant operations to the point where they have become relatively routine. At some point\, he started asking his patients why they wanted to live. The answers he got were all over the place – frequently unexpected\, often touching. He did a TED talk here in Charleston last spring about the responses he has gotten\, which can\, hopefully\, help us reflect on our own reasons to live. And if that is not enough\, in his spare time he is also a painter and musician. His works of art are currently on display in Baltimore and Washington\, D.C. \nPlease join the Speakers Series on April 15th. There will be a cash bar and passed hors d’oeuvres between 6:30 – 7:00 PM. The program will begin promptly at 7:00 PM and should conclude around 8:00 PM.

SUMMARY:Pat Tillman Honor Run
DESCRIPTION:The Pat Tillman Honor Run\, which started in Charleston in 2016\, is part of a nationwide series of events that honor the life and legacy of Pat Tillman. \nTillman\, a professional football player for the Arizona Cardinals\, left his NFL career to enlist in the U.S. Army following the 9/11 attacks. He tragically passed away in 2004 in Afghanistan\, and the story of his selflessness and sacrifice has since inspired many. \nThe Charleston event is one of several runs and events organized by the Pat Tillman Foundation\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting veterans and military families. The Honor Run series\, which includes races in multiple cities across the United States\, raises funds for scholarships and programs that support military service members and their families\, with a special focus on Tillman Scholars—veterans who are committed to continuing their education and service to their communities. \nThe Charleston\, this 4.2-mile run\, has grown in popularity\, drawing participants who come together to celebrate Tillman’s life\, promote community service\, and raise awareness of the Pat Tillman Foundation’s mission. It typically features both a run and a walk\, with participants encouraged to honor Tillman’s commitment to service and sacrifice. The event has become an important part of the local community’s efforts to support veterans and raise funds for educational initiatives.
