SUMMARY:DI Speaker’s Series
DESCRIPTION:The Daniel Island Community Speaker’s Series returns on Wednesday evening\, April 15\, from 7:00 – 8:00 PM in the ballroom at the Daniel Island Club. The speaker will be Dr. Joseph Scalea a transplant surgeon\, the Vice Chair of Surgery\, and Director of Innovation at the Medical University of South Carolina. \nDr. Scalea is a transplant surgeon. What he does is hugely important. Without a new organ\, his patients are going to die. He is also an inventor and an entrepreneur. In the world of transplant surgery\, the required logistics are measured in minutes. With that in mind\, he founded two companies that integrate drones into the supply chain. Imagine evaluating the organ\, accepting it\, arranging the drone transport\, monitoring the organ’s temperature\, its location\, and its ETA all from an app on your phone. That is revolutionary. The medical industry’s ability to diagnose\, treat\, and cure some of our most serious diseases is advancing at lightning speed. \nOver the years\, Dr. Scalea has performed thousands of transplant operations to the point where they have become relatively routine. At some point\, he started asking his patients why they wanted to live. The answers he got were all over the place – frequently unexpected\, often touching. He did a TED talk here in Charleston last spring about the responses he has gotten\, which can\, hopefully\, help us reflect on our own reasons to live. And if that is not enough\, in his spare time\, he is also a painter and musician. His works of art are currently on display in Baltimore and Washington\, D.C. \nPlease join the Speakers Series on April 15th. SUMMARY:DI Speaker's Series
DESCRIPTION:The Daniel Island Community Speaker’s Series returns on Wednesday evening\, January 21\, from 7:00-8:00 PM in the ballroom at the Daniel Island Club. Their speaker will be Carolyn Murray\, the co-anchor on several segments of “Count on News 2” each day on WCBD. \nMany of us know Carolyn because of her role as co-anchor of the evening news program. Fewer people know that she is also an avid weekend athlete. She has run 8 marathons\, 27 Cooper River Bridge runs\, practices yoga\, is a certified spin instructor\, and a Barre instructor. She tries hard to maintain a healthy body. \nBut in early 2020 – just as COVID arrived on the scene – her life changed. She experienced a health scare that impacted everything about her image of herself —  her role as a wife\, a mother\, a journalist. After surgery\, she spent three months in a hospital. She was alone\, scared\, angry\, and needed to figure out how she was going to go forward. It is that story she will share with us this evening. Her journey from despair to resilience is truly inspiring. Perhaps she can help us all figure out how to proceed when speed bumps occur in our own lives. \nCarolyn is also known as an empathetic storyteller. Throughout her career\, she has interviewed and effectively told the stories of leaders such as Bill Clinton\, Hillary Clinton\, Oprah\, Coretta Scott King\, U.S. Congressman John Lewis\, and baseball legend Hank Aaron. As you will see\, she is equally adept at telling her own story. \nPlease join in on January 21. There will be a cash bar and passed hors d’oeuvres between 6:30-7:00 PM. SUMMARY:Daniel Island Speaker's Series with Marc Fetten
DESCRIPTION:The Daniel Island Community Speaker’s Series will resume on Wednesday evening\, September 17\, from 7:00-8:00 PM in the ballroom at the Daniel Island Club. The speaker will be Marc Fetten\, who is the Founder and CEO of GreenGasUSA. \nGreenGas is transforming how industries capture and convert greenhouse gases into renewable energy. \nFarmers work tirelessly to provide us with a reliable and secure food system. But in the process\, huge amounts of animal waste are created and stored in what become toxic holding ponds. Methane gas escapes from these ponds into the air and seeps into the water table\, resulting in a challenge to the environment far more serious than the CO2 emitted from our gas-powered cars and trucks. GreenGas USA takes waste products from food processing facilities and transforms them into natural propane gas\, which is used to create electricity for use by other manufacturing companies. This circular energy technology repurposes waste streams and turns them into renewable energy.  In addition to the dairy\, cattle\, and poultry farming operations\, GreenGasUSA is doing the same thing with waste from landfills\, restaurants\, wastewater\, and even prison farm mature. \nAs a result of all this\, farmers now have a new stream of income; environmentally fragile areas are being cleaned up\, and manufacturers have another source of energy to choose from. How could they reconcile these ideals with their own reality? DESCRIPTION:The Daniel Island Community Speaker Series with North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess will host another very highly anticipated event Wednesday evening\, November 13th from 6:30-8:00 PM. The featured speaker will be North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess. \nNorth Charleston is turbocharged and much of what is happening there will affect all on Daniel Island. \nFor example\, the old Navy Yard is being transformed into a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood that will include a public plaza with outdoor dining\, an event space\, and a new music venue. The Coast Guard is building a new facility on the south end of Navy Base which will become the Center of Operations for the entire East Coast. The old paper mill is being converted into additional terminal space for the port. That will require rebuilding the Don Holt Bridge to allow larger vessels to pass. Widening the Don Holt means that I-526 will need to be widened as well. \nThe mayor has a lot on his plate. But Mayor Burgess has lived in North Charleston his entire life and seems up to the task. Join in and see what he has in mind. \nThis free event will be held Wednesday\, November 13th\, at the Daniel Island Club\, 600 Island Park Drive.
