SUMMARY:Beach Sweep/River Sweep
DESCRIPTION:Come and volunteer for the 36th Annual Beach/River Sweep Family Event and help keep our beautiful Daniel Island looking great and healthy. Students earn Service Hours! We’ll sweep at low tide: 12:00 pm to 2:00 PM (PLEASE NOTE NEW TIME TO REFLECT TIDES)\, Rain or Shine\, Saturday\, October 4\, 2025. Look for the small registration table set up on the stage in DI Waterfront Park to register. You will receive an S.C. Sea Grant Tally sheet to keep track of the litter you pick up and a recyclable garbage bag. Team up with a buddy so one can pick up the litter and the other can keep score of the litter found. It’s pure fun (like a scavenger hunt) to clean up the island with your friends and family. Or\, just come out for a walk and enjoy the outdoors! Bring your buddies! \n\nAll are welcome. No advance registration required; just show up.\nChildren must be accompanied by an adult.\nTeens will be paired with others unless they come with a buddy of their own.  Participation counts for SERVICE HOURS (bring your volunteer forms or use ours)\nBring water to keep hydrated.\nWear closed-toe shoes\, long sleeves\, sunscreen\, and bug spray.\nBring a grabber to reach for litter from a safe place. We will supply grabbers if you don’t have any.\nThe marshes contain a lot of litter\, which the high tide brings in and the low tide reveals. Only adults can reach in there\, provided they wear rubber boots or marsh boots and have a buddy.\n\nThis event is sponsored by the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and the DI Community Fund. Prepare to have fun!

Look for the tables set up on the gravel path across from DI’s Waterfront Park to register in person and check-in. You’ll sweep at low tide: 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM\, to be able to get near the marshes\, but don’t risk picking up big pieces. Safety first! Young ones should stick to sidewalks\, bushes and trails. \n\nAll are welcome. No advanced registration required; just show up.\nWear a hat\, sunscreen\, closed-toe shoes\, long pants and sleeves\, bug spray. Bring water to keep hydrated.\nSC Sea Grants provides garbage bags and some gloves. Bring your own plastic gloves\, if possible\, and a trash picker if you have one.\n“Tally Forms” to keep track of the type of litter you’ll collect are provided. These forms are provided by S. C. Sea Grant Consortium.\nBring a pen or pencil.\nParticipation counts for SERVICE HOURS (bring your volunteer forms or use ours)\nThe event could use a volunteer to take pictures.\nOne research credit can be awarded to one or two students willing to collate and present the data.\n\nQuestions?
