DESCRIPTION:There is an exciting program coming on January 21\, when the Daniel Island Historical Society will welcome Mepkin Abbey’s David George and Bill Fitzpatrick\, former chair of Preservation South Carolina and current director of Sacred Spaces S.C.\, for a presentation entitled “Mepkin Abbey and the Sacred Corridor Project: A Place of Significant Ancient Spiritual Practice and Worship.” \nThe program will spotlight the incredible history at Mepkin Abbey and the work underway on Taveau Church\, a historic Black church near Mepkin that dates back more than 125 years\, and Berkeley County’s “Sacred Corridor.” Described as a “sacred space for the ages\,” Taveau Church is “an eyewitness to our nation’s history and an important site in the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor.” \nFor more on Taveau Church visit our web blog at https://dihistoricalsociety.com/blog/taveau-church/

SUMMARY:Thunder in the Harbor
DESCRIPTION:Fort Sumter. Charleston. April 1861. The bombardment and surrender of Sumter were only the beginning of the story. Both sides understood the military significance of the fort and the busy seaport\, which played host to one of the longest most complicated\, and fascinating campaigns of the entire Civil War. \nJoin the Daniel Island Historical Society as they go to the front lines of the momentous battle and the storied fort with guest speaker Richard Hatcher\, historian for Fort Sumter Fort Moultrie Historical Park and author of “Thunder in the Harbor: Fort Sumter and the Civil War.” Mr. Hatcher will spotlight Fort Sumter between 1829 and 1947\, as detailed in his book\, which has been dubbed the first modern study to document the fort from its origins through the war and up to the present. FREE. Tuesday\, October 15\, 7 to 8 p.m.\, Church of the Holy Spirit\, 299 Seven Farms Drive\, Daniel Island. \nFor more on Hatcher and his book CLICK HERE.

SUMMARY:DI Historical Society Program
DESCRIPTION:As part of their deepening relationship with the Berkeley 250 organization\, the Daniel Island Historical Society (DIHS) is pleased to be sponsoring a presentation by author Bill Segars on the book he co-authored with Jim Neal entitled CHURCHES IN SOUTH CAROLINA BURNED DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION: A PICTORIAL GUIDE. For an advance opportunity to check out the book (and even order a copy) CLICK HERE\n \nIf you think about it\, burning churches to punish what they considered traitors made a lot of sense for the British. Churches were usually prominent centers of the community and thus logical targets. \nThis sure will be a fascinating presentation. Please note this event is NOT at the usual venue\, or typical day\, and time. \nDIHS will meet at the Daniel Pointe Retirement Community\, 514 Robert Daniel Drive on the Park Side of the island from 5 pm to 6:30 pm on Thursday\, August 15\, 2024. \n
