Would a bus service be preferable? What do local businesses think? Why don’t seniors on Daniel Island enjoy the same Uber vouchers that most of the Charleston area does? \nThese and other related questions are fair game at this meeting. The meeting is scheduled to end at 6:00 pm to allow people to attend the DINA meeting at 6:30 the same evening.

DESCRIPTION:Most South Carolinians know the name Francis Marion\, the Revolutionary War brigadier general famously nicknamed the “Swamp Fox” for his daring guerrilla tactics against British forces. Far fewer know the story of the man who faithfully served beside him—one of the many unsung heroes of the American Revolution. \nOscar Marion\, also known as “Buddy\,” was an enslaved man of African descent who is believed to have grown up alongside Francis Marion in Berkeley County. During the Revolutionary War\, the two served together with the 2nd South Carolina Continental Regiment. Oscar’s contributions extended far beyond preparing meals for the troops. He provided vital support in the field\, assisted military operations\, and is believed to have served as a personal spy for Franic Marion\, gathering intelligence that aided the Patriot cause. \nOn Tuesday\, September 15\, join the Daniel Island Historical Society and Berkeley 250 as they welcome acclaimed author\, speaker\, and founder of the Slave Dwelling Project\, Joe McGill\, for a compelling and thought-provoking presentation portraying Oscar Marion. \nThrough third-person interpretation\, Mr. McGill will bring to life the experiences of Oscar and other African Americans who served during the Revolutionary War\, highlighting the often-overlooked contributions of Black men and women in the struggle for independence. Participants will be invited to explore themes of loyalty\, resilience\, service\, and survival while examining perspectives that challenge traditional narratives of the Revolutionary era. \nBy connecting the past to the present\, McGill’s powerful portrayal encourages deeper reflection on freedom\, identity\, and the enduring impact of history on our lives today. \nJoseph McGill\, Jr. is a public historian\, preservationist\, and the Founder and Executive Director of the Slave Dwelling Project\, a nationally recognized initiative dedicated to preserving and interpreting the lives of the enslaved. Since 2010\, he has conducted over 250 overnight stays in former slave dwellings across the United States\, bringing attention to these often-overlooked structures and the stories they hold. A former National Park Service Ranger and Field Officer for the National Trust for Historic Preservation\, McGill is also coauthor of Sleeping with the Ancestors: How I Followed the Footprints of Slavery. His work has been featured on PBS\, NPR\, and the Smithsonian Channel.

DESCRIPTION:Come and volunteer for the 37th Annual Beach/River Sweep Family Event and help keep our beautiful Daniel Island looking great and healthy. Students earn Service Hours! We’ll sweep at low tide: 8:00 am to 10:00 am (PLEASE NOTE NEW TIME TO REFLECT TIDES)\, Rain or Shine\, Saturday\, September 19th. \nLook for the small registration table set up on the stage in DI Waterfront Park to register. You will receive an S.C. Sea Grant Tally sheet to keep track of the litter you pick up and a recyclable garbage bag. Team up with a buddy so one can pick up the litter and the other can keep score of the litter found. It’s pure fun (like a scavenger hunt) to clean up the island with your friends and family. Or\, just come out for a walk and enjoy the outdoors! Bring your buddies! \n\nAll are welcome. No advance registration required; just show up.\nChildren must be accompanied by an adult.\nTeens will be paired with others unless they come with a buddy of their own.  Participation counts for SERVICE HOURS (bring your volunteer forms or use ours)\nBring water to keep hydrated.\nWear closed-toe shoes\, long sleeves\, sunscreen\, and bug spray.\nBring a grabber to reach for litter from a safe place. We will supply grabbers if you don’t have any.\nThe marshes contain a lot of litter\, which the high tide brings in and the low tide reveals. Only adults can reach in there\, provided they wear rubber boots or marsh boots and have a buddy.\n\nThis event is sponsored by the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and the DI Community Fund. Prepare to have fun!
