The Charleston Tea Party

January 18 @ 7:00 pm 8:00 pm

The Daniel Island Historical Society kicks off 2022 with Guest speaker: John Young, author of The Charleston Tea Party. John also serves as operations manager for the Powder Magazine.

Why was there a parliamentary duty on a common grocery item? What happened to the cargo of tea that was shipped to Charleston? Why were three shiploads of tea in one of the colonies’ largest ports destroyed? What were the circumstances that brought colonial America’s favorite non-alcoholic beverage center stage in a face-off between the mother country and her obstreperous children? And how did the citizenry of Charleston react to this latest taxation-without-representation enactment?

Get the answers to these questions and learn more about John Young’s newly published book The Charleston Tea Party at this special DIHS presentation! John and his family moved from Vermont to Charleston almost a quarter-century ago. He attended the University of Vermont, graduating with a degree in secondary education. After living in Charleston for four years, John became part of the touring community, first as docent and education coordinator at The Old Exchange, later as a walking tour guide, and currently as Director of Operations at The Powder Magazine. In 2007, Evening Post Books published his parks history, A Walk in the Parks. In 2012-13, John helped to create The Powder Magazine Tricentennial Exhibit and edited the book Arsenal of History. In 2021, he released his latest book – The Charleston Tea Party.
